Chrome Browser

Update: October 2015 - Google has decided they will no longer support various plugins in their Chrome browser, including Java applets, Silverlight and Facebook Videos. It is recommended to run our orbit applet is other web browsers, such as Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari.

Java 8

Update: January 29, 2015 - In some of the later versions of Java, Oracle is requiring applets be 'signed', or they will be blocked from running. We've purchased a security cerficate and signed our orbit applet and it's the version currently running.

For some versions of Java, including versions from Java 7 and Java 8, the Java Exception List workaround (below) may still be required.

If you are experiencing any issues in running the applet, please report it to baalke@jpl.nasa.gov and include the following information:

  • Web browser and its version number (ie: Firefox 28.0)
  • Your computer platform (ie: MacOS 10.6.8)
  • Screenshots of any error messages from running the applet
  • Java version you are using (you can detemine this by visiting http://www.java.com/verify)

Java Exception List Workaround

In January 2014, Oracle released Java 7 Update 51 with increased security checks. These checks effectively disabled the orbit applet used on the NEO website for some people. There also have been reports that this Java update affected Yahoo Games, Ebay and Paypal Shipping Label, USAA, and Etrade Marketcaster.

If our orbit applet is no longer working for you, then try this workaround. Add http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov and http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov to the Java Exception List. For some versions of Java 8, we've discovered this exception list workaround is still required.

Steps to Add URL to the Java Exception Site list:

  • Go to the Java Control Panel
-On Windows, Click Start and then Configure Java
-On Macintosh, Go to Systems Preferences and click on the Java button
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click on the Edit Site List button
  • Click the Add in the Exception Site List window

  • Click in the empty field under Location field to enter the following URL:
    http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov
  • Click OK to save the URL that you entered.
  • Click Continue on the Security Warning dialog
  • Click the Add (again) in the Exception Site List window
  • Click in the empty field under Location field to enter the following URL:
    http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov
  • Click Continue on the Security Warning dialog
  • Restart your web browser
